Soo Haingkheang, Huyleang Mann and Rathana are all students at the Department of Media and Communication at the Royal University of Phnom Penh. Most of them joined this major because they were interested in media, communication, and English. Rathana says she likes this major a lot, because it is very up to date. Huyleang adds that she likes the major because it also focuses on English and media. She mentions that there are a lot of opportunities to develop yourself and there’s even a photography festival where you can show your photography work to other students.
Of course, there are also things about the major that the students dislike. The students say that the major can be challenging sometimes, as you have to focus on a lot of subjects at the same time. The students agree that the subjects English, Khmer, Literature, and History are the most relevant high school subjects for following a major in Communication. Rathana says that you should definitely study this major if you love sharing your ideas with other people, or if you are interested in (social) media, entertainment, journalism and public relations.
The three students all have a different favourite subject. Soo really enjoyed Journalism Inquiry, as this subject provided the students the chance to practice the skill of writing news reports for both national and international news outlets. Huyleang also enjoyed subjects about writing news, because she likes telling Cambodians what happened in their country. Rathana on the other hand really liked the subject Public Relations.
After graduation, Soo wants to become a news reporter, work for an NGO or in public relations. Huyleang on the other hand wants to become a freelance journalist or a communication advisor. Rathana would like to work at a marketing agency, focusing on digital marketing or social media management.

She mentions that the availability of scholarships was very important to her when deciding what major to follow. Luckily, she was able to receive a scholarship for this major. The major in Marketing and Branding will teach you how to reach the target group through a wide range of channels (such as social media). Examples of some of the main topics that are covered are online marketing, communication and consumer behavior.
Interview with a Marketing and Branding graduate
LUCH Chhengly (25) graduated in a Marketing major at the National University of Management. She took this major because she was interested in business and with this major it would be easier to find a job in that field.
What she liked about her major was the study of customer attitude, of marketing strategies and marketing plans. What she liked doing most was research, because this provides insight into internal and external factors and helps prepare strategies for businesses. What she didn’t like was that in the foundation year you have to study subjects like Khmer history, which according to her are not related to the major. The workload is average; one assignment per teacher, 4 hours a day, 20 hours per week.
According to Chhengly, the high school subject that is most relevant to this major is Economics, but what is even more important is experience, so while you are studying you have to find a job.
Chhengly’s tip for you? If you are interested in this major, do more research on it and decide whether it is what you want or not. Then you have to check what job opportunities you will have when you graduate.

Interview with Mass Communication and Media Management students
Imrorn and Sar Sanponhroath are both students of Media Management at the Royal University of Phnom Penh. Sar indicates that her interest in production and writing made her decide to enroll in this major. She had always loved to tell stories and often wondered how videos (such as movies and music clips) were made. Her favorite things about the major are that she can freely share her opinion and that the major taught her to be more considerate in making judgements. Moreover, she likes the fact that she now understands more about sensitive topics and that she is comfortable discussing these topics, while some Cambodians are not yet comfortable doing that.
What Imrorn dislikes about the major, is that students need a lot of equipment such as a camera, high performing laptop, et cetera. Sar adds to this by saying that she dislikes the fact that there is only little time to practice and prepare for productions. Moreover, she mentions that the techniques of filming and the preparation for a production were different than expected. However, both students are still very satisfied with their major and highly enjoy all subjects. Imrorn’s favorite subjects so far were Principle and Practice of Journalism, Khmer Writing Composition, Media and Society, and Introduction to Research Study. These subjects really helped him towards his goal of becoming a communication professional in the future. Sar’s favorite subject is currently Radio Production. She explains that this topic is fun, since you get to test audio recordings and learn about different sound effects.
Chhum Chhayvathanak is a recent graduate of Media Management and currently works as a Senior Digital Communication Officer. What he loved about his major was the focus on digital (communication) skills and news reports. His biggest tip for high school students is to read as much as possible, and to pay attention to the subject of Khmer Literature. This subject allowed him to understand more about the context when starting to write a story or news report. Sar and Imrorn agree with this.
Imrorn’s tip for you? Make sure that you are proficient in English and that you have sufficient knowledge about general culture. Sar advises all high school students to be more confident and brave. She also recommends students to be well-prepared: do not wait until you start in class.
