If you want to learn more about animals in general, how to breed different species and how to take care of them, then a major in Animal Science might be something for you. You will learn how to manage all kinds of species while keeping in mind the different ecological, societal, and economical effects this might have. Moreover, you will learn about the genetics and anatomy of animals, in order to facilitate effective breeding.
Interview with an Animal Science student
DOEURN Horn (23) is majoring in Animal Science at the Royal University of Agriculture; he is in his second year. Horn chose this major because he loves raising animals. He raised animals when he lived in the province to generate an income for his studies and assumes that this major will provide more knowledge. He loves animals and knows about their natural behaviour, so he is convinced that this is the right major for him.
The subjects he likes best is the study of ruminants. It focusses on feeding, how they live, what sort of animals are ruminants and the way their bodies function.
The workload is average, 5 days a week and 4 hours a day. Some weeks students do experiments and some weeks they take care of animals for experiments on their own. Horn is working and studying and saving money at the same time. When he graduates he wants to own a small farm.
His advice for students who are interested in this major is to follow their hearts; there is a wide market for it so you will find a job.
