DOEURN Horn (23) is majoring in Animal Science at the Royal University of Agriculture; he is in his second year. Horn chose this major because he loves raising animals. He raised animals when he lived in the province to generate an income for his studies and assumes that this major will provide more knowledge. He loves animals and knows about their natural behaviour, so he is convinced that this is the right major for him.

The subjects he likes best is the study of ruminants. It focusses on feeding, how they live, what sort of animals are ruminants and the way their bodies function.

The workload is average, 5 days a week and 4 hours a day. Some weeks students do experiments and some weeks they take care of animals for experiments on their own. Horn is working and studying and saving money at the same time. When he graduates he wants to own a small farm.

His advice for students who are interested in this major is to follow their hearts; there is a wide market for it so you will find a job.

Sophun also enjoyed studying the rainwater catchment system. This major more than met Sophun’s expectations: because of Sophun’s achievements a scholarship to pursue a master’s degree abroad was offered to Sophun. He chose this major because he loves natural resources, forests, loves planting and wants to do research in this field and become an expert in work related to Forestry. What he likes about his major is that he works directly in the forest and learns about the environment, plants and natural resources management. Moreover, he gets knowledge about plants and planting and about looking after plants and forests. His favourite subject so far is Botany, because he learns about everything that is to be known about plants, such as names, stem shapes, leaves etc. Ly adds that he has to study 5 days a week from 8.00 to 12.00, but he loves it. In the future Ly hopes to work as a government officer, for instance as a ranger at the Ministry of Environment, or as a chief of Forestry in Forest Administration; but there are plenty of options. He would also like to own a business and sell plants for decoration.

His advice for high school students who are interested in this major: Pay special attention to the high school subjects of Biology, Geography and Chemistry. English and computer skills are also important for research in this field and of course you need to be able to communicate with others.

THY Liheang (21) is a year 3 student at the Institute of Technology of Cambodia (ITC) and is majoring in Civil Construction. THUNNVORTH Sarik (24) has graduated in Civil Engineering from Paññāsāstra University of Cambodia. Liheang says he chose this major because he loves Science and Mathematics and wants to be able to do building constructions and help others as well, for instance by building shelters for the poor. Sarik adds that the construction sector is very important in Cambodia because the country is developing rapidly, so construction is increasing and there is a need for professionals with this skill.

What is good about this major is that it is based on reason and science and can be used creatively and with flexibility as long as it complies with standards. However, calculations for problem solving can be difficult and evidence may be hard to find, but the more you practise, the easier it gets.

The workload varies: Liheang says he spends 30 hours at the institute and needs more time to study at home. Sarik says you will be studying at university for 5 days a week, three hours a day, but you need more time for reviewing lessons and for practising in order to fully understand everything.

Liheang would like to work in the calculation section of construction in the future; Sarik is already working in construction and hopes to own a business in this sector sometime in the future.

Their advice if you are interested in this major: The high school subjects of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry are important, but Geography and Geology are also important because you need to know the details of the place you are going to build on. They add that you should also pay attention to Khmer, English, French, Citizen Morality and should have good communication skills. Besides, you must be able to work under pressure, be able to work in the sun and be prepared to work late at night.

Urban Planning encompasses the process of developing and designing urban areas. When studying this major, you will learn how to effectively plan, design, and construct cities, taking into consideration the physical form, economic functions, and social impacts of the urban environment.

Naro (29) decided to pursue his master’s degree in Urban and Regional planning at the University of Queensland, Australia. He likes city planning, trying to find solutions for the problems in cities like Phnom Penh. He has learnt that better city design is better for people and nature. What he didn’t like about this major is that it is mainly theory, so it is hard to put this theory into practice. Moreover, trying to gain a master’s degree overseas is quite challenging; all the time you have to finish tasks as well as study. What he liked best was that the lecturer gave students the task of designing a better city for a community that had problems. This way students were faced with a challenge to find actual solutions to a real problem. However, he feels that the things he learnt in Australia can’t really be applied in Cambodia, because the regulations are different. Naro now works in Urban Planning at the Ministry of Land Management.

His tips for students who are interested in this major: be creative, open your mind and keep up with new technology and design from all over the world.

PHAIER Vuthy (24) is a freshman at the University of Cambodia and is studying Business Management; ROTH Vanda (20) is a sophomore at Preah Sihamoniraja Buddhist University and is studying General Management.

Vuthy mentions it was difficult for him to choose a major, because he is from the province and the people around him had no experience in how to choose the right major. To gain more information, he spoke to a lot of people, such as his friends, his teachers, and students who were already attending university. Before making his decision, he considered his skills and his interests. Vuthy chose Business Management because it provides a chance to learn about effective communication and to meet new people, get new ideas and learn about business. Vanda chose General Management because he wants to learn how to successfully lead a team. The students also mention that it is easy to find a job with this major because you learn how to communicate effectively, learn about human resource management and about business.

Both students admit that they have problems with English, so in order to read the books and do research they have to spend a lot of time on improving their English. Roth Vanda adds that Accounting is a problem, because so far it is only theory and it is difficult to remember what you learn if you can’t put this knowledge into practice.

The workload varies; you need 5 days in school, but also time for assignments, reading, research and preparing for quizzes.

After graduation Vuthy would like to work in general management, Vanda would like to have a factory in his province so that people there are no longer only dependent on farming or logging and will still generate an income when climate change affects crops.

Their tips for students: Study what you like, don’t just do what others tell you to do; study hard and do some volunteering to improve your skills.

During the Entrepreneurship major, Hakly liked problem solving, communication and innovation the most, and it is therefore no surprise that Innovate Marketing, Financial Marketing, and Leadership were listed as most favourite subjects. These subjects inspired Hakly to move forward and grow as a person. Hakly spent about 14 to 35 hours on assignments. Currently, Hakly is working as a barista trainer and business consultant for a private company, and dreams to be a leader of an organisation that performs well for society someday.

CHHOEUT Mab (22) is studying International Business Management at the CEO Institute in Phnom Penh and is in his first year. He chose this study because he wants to be a businessman and is good at communication. Things he likes about this major are Languages, Accounting and Administration. English is his favourite subject because he wants to study abroad as well. He studies from Monday to Saturday from 1.30 pm to 5.30 pm, but he is planning to study in the evening so that he can have a full time job. When Mab is in his second year he will work as an administrator; he hopes to be the manager of a company or have his own business when he gets his bachelor degree.

His advice for students who are interested in this major: pay special attention to the high school subjects of English, Economics, Mathematics and Khmer, you need to focus on them in this major.

SENG Ratha (24) is studying Finance and Banking and is a year 4 student at Paññāsāstra University of Cambodia. KOEM Sreynich (21) is a year 2 student at the Center for Banking Studies, majoring in Finance and Banking.

They say that for this major you should love reading and working with numbers and be serious about your studies. You will learn how to use money more efficiently, gain knowledge about the Banking Sector and about owning a business. Moreover, your English will improve because the documents you read for research are mostly in English.

Both Ratha and Sreynich study 5 days a week, but Ratha says extra time is needed for research, presentations, group meetings, group discussions and for reviewing lessons. Ratha loves the subject of Accounting, because it is about cash, investments and things we need in everyday life, but she doesn’t like Statistics. Sreynich likes the subject of Monetary Economy best, because it provides an insight into both local and world economy.

Ratha mentions that high school subjects that are important for this major are Khmer, Morality, General Knowledge, Mathematics and English. Mathematics because the study is about numbers and English is crucial because most documents for research are in English. Sreynich also recommends paying special attention to Economics because you need Mathematics and Economics to understand the subjects in this major. Once you graduate, it will be easy to find a job.

REN Chiva (23), THATT Iengmonor (22), ROEUN Lida (20) and MIEV Saveth (22) study Community Development at the Royal University of Phnom Penh. They chose this major because they had some experience in this field and wanted to be involved in community work or in the development of communities in rural areas. LIN Nabet (20) takes Community Studies at the Royal University of Phnom Penh. He chose this major because job opportunities are good after graduation and you gain knowledge about economic analysis and stock, revenue growth, finance, export and import and you are taught to find documents that relate to economic growth at home and abroad.

Their favourite subjects? Four of the interviewees mention Community Leadership and Community Management, Community Administration, Community Development, Project Management, Research Studies and Entrepreneurship. Nabet’s favourite subject is History of Economics because it gives you an insight into the problems in economy and economic processes around the world.
Ienmonor and Lida add that this major has more positives. You can go on study tours of communities, you get an opportunity to join trainings and to compete with foreign students and you have a chance to go abroad. 

You will spend 5 days a week at university, but need more time to do research, group work, assignments and presentations. This will take 18 hours or more after you finish classes, in the evening or at the weekend.

Their plans for the future: work for the Ministry of Rural Development, for organisations related to community work, agricultural entrepreneurship or teaching in this field.

Their tips for you? The students think that the high school subjects of Morality, Khmer, Geography, Geology, History, Mathematics and English are important if you want to take this major. Lida mentions that you should also love social work and Iengmonor adds that you should be skilful in communication. You should also stay focussed, communicate with the people around you and take every chance you get to improve your abilities. You should also be flexible and learn to work in a team. 

Interview with a Developmental Economics and Economics and Management student

DAN Daravuth (19) is a year 2 student at the Royal University of Law and Economics (RULE) and is taking two majors: Developmental Economics and Economics and Management. Daruvith got a scholarship to study at RULE and as he is really interested in politics and socioeconomics these majors are a good fit. So far he is really pleased with his choice because you learn how the government deals with the economic crisis and why spending is increased or decreased. You will also understand the relationship between price and the quality of goods, you learn about agricultural economics, international economics and learn how the market works.

His favourite subjects are Macroeconomics and Microeconomics, because they provide you with a better understanding of world economy and how individuals, firms and states make certain decisions in the economic world.
What is difficult for him is that for this major you need to be good at English, because most books on economics and articles for research are in English. So, if you are interested in this major, you should pay special attention to English when you are in high school. Another high school subject you should concentrate on is mathematics, because this is essential in economics.

Daravuth says these two majors met his expectations, because he now understands how economic decisions come about. He adds that in the future he would like to work for the Ministry of Economy and Finance.

What the student likes about this major is that the study includes both regional and international fields and the skills learned can be used in real life. Moreover, the major contributes to social development. The subject they enjoyed most so far is International Trade Theories and Policies. What this student doesn’t like is that the major focuses on theory, not practice and that the workload is high when the timeline and deadline for all subjects is the same.
In the future this student wants to work in social development.

The government of Cambodia offers a teacher training program in order to become a secondary school teacher. A few conditions apply if you would like to register for this program. First, you have to take a state exam after high school. This is possible for high school graduates and students, but also for government officers and graduated university students until the age of 35. Before taking the exam, you select the school subject that you would like to teach. This subject will be covered during the exam, besides Khmer General Education. When you pass the exam you can sign up for this training programme, which lasts two years. After these years, you can start your official job as a teacher.

SENG Danin (24) is a fresh graduate in TESOL from Paññāsāstra University of Cambodia. She chose this major because it is about teaching the English language. What attracted her to TESOL is that you are taught pedagogical skills and you learn how language acquisition works, so you learn how to teach effectively.

SEK Kimcheng (23) studies TESOL at Paññāsāstra University of Cambodia and is currently in her fourth year. When she was still in high school herself, she realized that she really liked the English language and also taught her little cousin. Also, she thinks English is very important nowadays and the language makes her feel confident. It is her goal to share what she knows with children who live far away from the city or in the countryside, and are having a hard time getting an education. What attracted her to TESOL is its system language and that it makes her feel like she can do anything with the English language (such as traveling the world or teaching English in other countries than Cambodia!). Also, she learns about different strategies and methodologies that she can apply at work or in her everyday life. Kimcheng studies 3 hours per day and had to stop working because of the busy schedule. She does have spare time on the weekends. After graduation, she would like to work for a non-profit organization, which will allow her to share her knowledge with children and motivate them to be the best person they can be for society.

Her tip for you? Study hard, follow the teacher’s advice and be sure that the reason you choose this major is because you really like it. Follow your heart, not your friends’ or family’s opinions.

In the future Songheng would like to own a shop with all kinds of electrical equipment and he would also like to offer repairs of electrical systems.

Songheng thinks the high school subject of Mathematics is important because Mathematics is needed in everything you do in this major. His tips if you are interested in this major: have a look at other subjects as well and if you decide to take this major, be patient, and try to practise as much as you can.

HORN Mensang (23) managed to obtain a scholarship for a bachelor degree in Information Technology from IIC University of Technology and is now pursuing his studies at the National Institute of Education (NIE) in order to get a bachelor Plus 1 degree in the field of Information Technology to become a teacher. He chose this major because he was interested in working with machinery and wanted to work fairly independently, without a lot of instructions from others.

Information Technology covers various fields and the ones he likes most are Software Development, Networking and Design. Mensang likes Web Design skills best because he can write his own website and put his knowledge into practice.

The workload can be challenging because of the work that has to be done to meet the deadline. Studying at university means studying five days a week and 3 hours per day. But you have to put in extra time to do research to understand the matter better and you have to take short courses that are relevant to the major you have chosen.

Mensang is glad he chose this study. The downside is that – working with computers all day –  he has acquired a problem with his eyes and has headaches. After he graduates, he wants to become a Teacher of Information Technology because it fits with his condition and requirements.

Mensang thinks that the high school subjects of Mathematics, English and Physics are crucial if you want to work in this field. He stresses that anyone who is interested in taking an Information Technology major should also take at least one short advanced course at a private school in order to find out which field they really like; this will also help them find a job.

PALAYSTINT Thorng is 20 years old and studies Telecommunication and Electrical Engineering at the Royal University of Phnom Penh. Three years ago he decided to enroll in this major because he liked to learn about mathematics and he wanted to innovate things that make people’s life easier. One of the things he likes about the telecommunication and electrical engineering major is that it offers real practice, which makes the major quite fun. In addition, the major has great opportunities for scholarships and exchange projects. On the other hand, Thorng doesn’t like the fact that he gets assigned a lot of assignments. Because of this, there is not much time left for a part-time job. Thorng needs to study hard, meaning that he has to go to the university for 4 hours a day and spend time afterwards on homework, research, and projects. But, in general he likes the major. His favorite subject is electromagnetic theory because here he can practice and experiment with real components. Thinking back to his highschool-time, he says that physics and maths are most relevant for his current study. 

His tip for you? Make sure you have a good understanding of physics and mathematics and do a little research on electronics.

Interview with Medicine students

Bunham Hay and Sophal Ret are both Medicine students at Université des Sciences de la Santé in Phnom Penh. Bunham (5th year student) explains that he chose to study Medicine because he loves to help and wants to save people’s lives. Sophal (8th year student) decided to study Medicine, because she wants people to be happy and healthy by relieving them of their pain. She thinks in becoming a doctor she will have a respected profession that will earn her a reasonable salary after graduation.

Sophal explains that she loves learning more about all mechanisms in the human body. Her favorite subject was Physiology, since she got to learn a lot about how the human body functions. Bunham’s favorite subjects were Medical and Surgical Pathology and Anatomy. What Sophal dislikes about the major are the long working hours that come with it. For example, sometimes she has to be on call for 24 hours, which is exhausting. Bunham mentions that he dislikes the amount of study material students have to read and memorize.

Medicine students have to work at healthcare institutions to put their knowledge into practice throughout their study. Currently, Sophal works full-time as an internist at a hospital as part of her final year. Apart from working hours, she spends around 20 hours per week on self-study. After graduation, Sophal would love to work as a physician, while Bunham would love to become a surgeon. Bunham recommends other prospective Medicine students to also take a specialized exam after finishing year 6, just like he will. 

The two students mentioned that there are three high school subjects which are important for this major. Firstly, Biology is applicable to Medicine, since you learn about cells, anatomy, and physiology. Secondly, Chemistry is relevant because you learn about reactions to certain molecules such as Calcium, Potassium, and Sodium. These are needed to save lives. Lastly, the subject of Ethics is relevant, because in order to be a good doctor you need to act ethically. Bunham mentions that a solid foundation in Mathematics is also useful for Medicine students.

Sophal’s tip for prospective Medicine students? Make sure that you really love the work. As a Medicine student, you need to be committed, motivated, and willing to study hard. Also make sure that you have a realistic career expectation, because the field of Medicine requires hard work, loads of discipline, and you need to be willing to sacrifice much time and effort into your career.

CHANNEANG Sry (23) is a fifth year pharmacy student at the University of Health Sciences.The choice for pharmacy was both a personal and a career choice. As her mom has so many drug allergies, she wants to know more about different drugs and their side effects. Also, she always wanted a job in the medical field and thinks that a major in pharmacy offers good job opportunities.

Sry thinks that a major in pharmacy is of great value as Cambodian people seek help from a pharmacist first.

The major in Pharmacy can be a bit demanding. Sry has to study 5 – 6 days a week for 8 hours a day. Clinical pharmacy is what she likes most about the pharmacy major. This subject teaches students about the use of drugs in a practical clinical case study. Sometimes remembering a lot of names, dosages, and side effects of all the different drugs can be a bit hard for her.

With a major in pharmacy she can work in different fields, like the pharmaceutical industry, community pharmacies, laboratories, pharmaceutical companies, and hospital pharmacies.
She thinks that biology, chemistry, and mathematics are the most important high school subjects in preparation for the pharmacy major.

Her tips for you: In high school, focus on the subjects of biology, mathematics, and chemistry, so that you are prepared for the entrance exam. Also, most documents at the university are written in French, so I recommend that you start learning the language in the first year of university or even before starting at the university. When doing a major in pharmacy, try to study as a group (3 – 4 people). You could start a discussion about the class or the case study. Lastly, pay attention in theory classes and laboratories and apply this knowledge during your internship.

PEONG Srey Nuch (26) recently graduated from the Royal University of Fine Arts, majoring in Archeology. This major appealed to her because she wanted to find out more about ancient constructions and art. She chose to study archaeology because this is the study of artifacts left on and in the ground – so it is the perfect fit. Srey Nuch really enjoyed studying about history, culture and art of different countries related to Cambodia. Srey Nuch enjoyed the subjects of History and the History of Khmer Art, because these subjects provide the detailed knowledge you need when visiting temples and sites. She also loved the study tours of the provinces to understand more about customs and religion and to find evidence left at temples or archaeological sites. Doing excavations to find evidence that would reveal things about history was another favourite activity during her studies. What she disliked was the study of Pali and Sanskrit, because it was too detailed and very complicated. For most of the assignments you need to work hard, do research and read a lot of documents, which are mostly in French or English.  So if you are weak at languages, this may take a lot of extra time.

Srey Nuch is now working in the Culture field as planned but hopes to become a researcher in the future when she has gained some more experience.

She mentions that high school subjects that are important for this major are History and Khmer. You need them because these are subjects you are going to study more deeply at university. French and English are also important.

TEP Thida is 25 years old and is currently a fourth year Tourism & Hospitality Management student at Cambodian Mekong University. She decided to apply for a major in the Hospitality and Tourism industry after she worked as a receptionist at a guesthouse for three years to support her family. Here she was responsible for several tasks: from hosting guests to managing the reservations, administration and food and beverage. This was where she discovered her passion for hospitality and tourism.

Her favourite subjects in the major are Communication Skills at Work, Tour Operation Management and Understanding Business. She likes Tour Operation Management the most because it combines studying and working at the same time. It allowed her to gain work experience in several positions. In her first year, she worked as a Homestay Coordinator at Advanced Centre for Empowerment (ACE). She hosted overseas visitors to show them the community and tourism sites in Phnom Penh and made sure they were enjoying their time at their homestays. In her third year, she worked as a Tour Operator at Amrita Tour & Travel, where she was in charge of the local and international tour program.

She has a harder time keeping up with Cost and Management Accounting and Money and Banking and studies every day of the week. While the major keeps her busy, it met her expectations as it pushed her to get better step by step. Following a subject related to history in high school might be useful, as it allows you to already get to know places and stories that can be used in assignments at university. After graduation, Thida wants to be a business owner in the Tourism field.
